Kwak Chulan defies traditional furniture-making conventions by presenting his innovative ‘art furniture,’ which merges functionality with artistic expression. Kwak’s artistic exploration began with the 'Cursive Structure' series, which reimagines the fluid brushstrokes of Korean calligraphy in three-dimensional space, embodying the concept of 'writing in space.' This has evolved into subsequent series such as 'Cuboid,' 'Zapino,' and 'Sluggish,' each demonstrating a progressive diversification in materials, techniques, and color palettes. His work consistently transforms the two-dimensional forms of typography into three-dimensional sculptures, maintaining a uniform stroke thickness that simultaneously conveys Eastern sensibility and modern sculptural aesthetics. His artistic objects also function as chairs, tables, or benches, deconstructing existing contexts and expanding the boundaries of traditional genres.
곽철안 작가는 전통적인 가구 제작 방식에서 벗어나, 기능성과 예술성을 결합한 ‘아트 퍼니처’라는 독창적인 작업을 선보인다. 한글 붓글씨의 일획을 입체적으로 재구성하여 한글을 공간에 쓴다는 개념의 ‘필기구조(Cursive Structure)’를 시작으로, 이후 ‘큐보이드’, ‘자피노’, ‘슬러기쉬’ 시리즈 등으로 확장되며, 재료와 기법, 컬러의 다양성을 통해 진화한다. 서체의 2차원적 형태를 3차원으로 입체화하는 그의 작업은 유려한 획의 굵기를 일정하게 유지해, 동양적 감성과 현대적 조형미를 동시에 보여준다. 그의 예술적 오브제는 의자나 테이블, 벤치로도 활용되며 기존의 맥락을 해체하고 장르의 구분을 확장한다.
